Six Months In: Charlotte’s Experience as a Novice Official Veterinarian

Hello everyone!

The last time I wrote something for the newsletter, I was just about to start my role as an official veterinarian—somehow, over six months have already flown by! It’s been a really positive and busy time, filled with learning and meeting so many lovely people along the way.

My day-to-day job involves working directly on the line with TB reactors, as well as doing the usual OV duties and post-mortem inspection in a smaller plant. It’s a good balance that keeps things interesting and provides a lot of variety.

Over the summer, it was great to have our team BBQ. Seeing everyone outside of the plant and getting the chance to catch up with colleagues I don’t usually see was really nice. Working with such a great team of OVs and MHIs honestly makes a huge difference—it’s a real game changer in how enjoyable the job is. I feel lucky to work alongside such dedicated people and to see how effective teamwork helps us get the job done every day.

I’m also hoping to submit my VetGDP soon—a CPD requirement for all new UK veterinary graduates. This runs alongside the Novice OV course, which offers a more structured way to build knowledge and confidence in a wide range of situations, specific to the job.

All in all, things are busy but good! Every day brings something new—whether it’s a case you haven’t seen before or a situation you haven’t yet encountered—but with the support of the team, we always get through it together.
