Changes for Pet Travel to Northern Ireland from 4 June 2025
New Rules: Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document Replaces AHC from June 2025
From 4 June 2025, pet travel rules between Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Northern Ireland are changing. If you're planning to take your dog, cat, ferret, or assistance dog from GB to Northern Ireland, you will no longer need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).
Instead, pet owners will need to apply for a free, lifelong Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document (NIPTD).
What This Means for Pet Owners:
From 4 June 2025, you must have a Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document to take your pet from GB into Northern Ireland.
Your pet’s microchip and paperwork will be checked at the port.
The NIPTD replaces the need for an AHC when travelling to Northern Ireland only.
An AHC is still required if you're travelling onwards to Ireland or any other EU country.
Who Doesn't Need It?
If you live in Northern Ireland, you do not need this document to travel to and from Great Britain with your pet.
How to Apply:
