The Opportunity
HallMark Veterinary and Compliance Services is recruiting for an experienced and motivated Meat Hygiene Inspector to join the Official Controls team at Shafa Farms.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced operational environment and is looking to further their career within Official Controls, supporting the delivery of food safety, animal welfare and regulatory compliance.
The initial base location for this role will be Shafa Farms, a poultry processing plant specialising in the processing of chickens. However, the successful candidate will need to be flexible and willing to work on a rotational basis at Farmers Fresh, Kenilworth and Simpson, Redditch, depending on operational requirements.
About the Role
As a Meat Hygiene Inspector, you will play a key role within HallMark Official Controls, working alongside the Official Veterinarian to ensure food safety, hygiene and animal welfare standards are maintained in accordance with Food Standards Agency requirements.
You will undertake post-mortem inspections, residue and relevant sampling activities, monitor Food Business Operator compliance, and support the effective delivery of official controls in line with the Manual of Official Controls.
Working within a busy poultry production environment, you will need to demonstrate a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and professionalism. You will also maintain accurate inspection records, identify and escalate non-compliances, and work collaboratively with Official Veterinarians, site management and operational colleagues.
Key Responsibilities:
Carry out post-mortem inspections in accordance with Food Standards Agency requirements and the Manual of Official Controls.
Undertake residue and relevant sampling activities as required.
Monitor Food Business Operator compliance with food safety, hygiene and animal welfare requirements.
Identify, record and appropriately escalate non-compliances.
Support the Official Veterinarian in delivering effective official controls.
Maintain accurate and timely inspection and sampling records.
Ensure inspections and official controls are carried out consistently and to the required regulatory standards.
Work effectively within a busy poultry processing environment.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with Official Veterinarians, Food Business Operators, site management and operational colleagues.
Use relevant IT systems to accurately record inspection findings and official control activities.
Maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and attention to detail at all times.
Work flexibly across Shafa Farms, Farmers Fresh and Simpson on a rotational basis, according to operational requirements.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential:
Current FSA-authorised Meat Hygiene Inspector qualification (or equivalent approved qualification).
Demonstrable knowledge of Food Standards Agency legislation and the Manual of Official Controls.
Experience carrying out post-mortem inspections and associated sampling activities.
Strong understanding of food safety, animal welfare and hygiene legislation.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining regulatory standards.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside Official Veterinarians and Food Business Operators.
Competence using IT systems to maintain accurate inspection records.
A proactive, reliable and flexible approach to supporting operational requirements.
Full UK or EU driving licence, or the ability to obtain a full UK driving licence within 12 months where applicable.
Full right to work in the UK.
Desirable:
Previous experience working within a poultry processing environment.
Experience working within an Official Controls or Food Standards Agency environment.
Experience working alongside Official Veterinarians and Food Business Operators.
Good knowledge of commercial poultry production and processing operations.
FDQ-accredited qualifications such as:
Level 4 Diploma for Proficiency in Meat Inspection
Level 2 Certificate for Poultry Meat Inspection
Level 2 Award in Principles of the Safe Use of Knives in Meat Inspection
